چکیده
We rst provide an empirical study of the energy-saving technological progress on the ENERDATA database. Energy intensity is shown to decrease over the period 1971-1999 in OECD countries, indicating a signi cant energy-saving technical progress trend. We also show via semi-parametric partially linear estimations that: (i) this trend is positively correlated with the investment rate, and (ii) the marginal productivity of investment has accelerated in the sub-period 1985-1999 compared to 1971-1984. Second, we build a general equilibrium vintage capital model with embodied energy-saving technical progress to formalize these ndings. In this set-up, we study to which extent a steady increase in the marginal productivity of investment goods and/or scrapping subsidies could compensate the output loss due to a cut in energy use. The latter scal policy is shown to be particularly ine cient in this respect, specially under slow energy-saving technical progress. In the end, our model predicts that the implementation of Kyoto-like protocols in the computers age is much less painful than what it could have been two decades ago, particularly in the USA, which can even improve their relative position if the requested energy cut rates are not "too" unequal across countries.

متن کاملUsing system dynamics approach to identify factors affecting energy consumption and CO2 emissions in urban transport: A Case Study of Tehran
The current trend of rising energy consumption in the world has hit mankind with two major crises: first, environmental pollution, and second, the acceleration of finishing energy supplies. Energy storage and reduction of pollutants in the city plays a crucial role in the process of maintaining existing energy. Meanwhile, the transportation sector needs attention due to its importance and posit...
متن کاملThe Energy Rebound Effect for Construction Industry: Empirical Evidence from the China
As the largest energy consumer and carbon emitter, China has made substantial efforts to improve energy efficiency for decrease energy consumption, while the energy rebound effect determines its effectiveness. The embodied energy consumption of construction projects accounted for nearly one-sixth of the total economy's energy consumption in China. This paper is based on the logical relationship...
متن کاملExploring the Trade Openness, Energy Consumption and Economic Growth Relationship in Iran by Bayer and Hanck Combined Cointegration and Causality Analysis
This paper aims to investigate the direction of causality between economic growth, energy consumption and trade openness in case of Iran for the period 1967–2012. We apply the newly developed combined cointegration test proposed by Bayer and Hanck (2013). Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) is applied to determine the direction of causality between these three variables. The result of Bayer-Ha...
متن کاملThe Impact of Technological Progress in the Energy Sector on Carbon Emissions: An Empirical Analysis from China
This paper investigates the relationship between technological progress in the energy sector and carbon emissions based on the Environment Kuznets Curve (EKC) and data from China during the period of 1995-2012. Our study confirms that the situation in China conforms to the EKC hypothesis and presents the inverted U-curve relationship between per capita income and carbon emissions. Furthermore, ...
